The complainant is James Kelly and the complaint is "that the Deft entered with the service of the complainant at Charlesland in said County and left said service on the 6th day of August 1874 before the terms specified in his agreement was completed."

Benjamin is taken to court by Richard Graydon of Tooman Road who believes Ben is poaching on his land. Richard is a farmer and land owner in the area. In later years Ben's wife Eliza will rent a house from him for a period.

"For that the Deft within the last six months, to wit, on the same day on the 22nd of November 1863 did go or enter upon the lands of Compt*, situate at the Downs in the Parish of Kilcoole and County of Wicklow, to look for and destroy game, and not being then and there authorized to go or enter upon the said Lands - contrary to the statute."

The case was dismissed with a 'Nil'. There is no other information.

Thomas Lott and Benjamin Henderson of Downs, "That you did commit a breach of the peace and assault each other at the Downs on the 29th of April 1867" The Henderson's and Lott's are neighbours.

The court ordered both men to "pay a fine of ten shillings each and costs or to be jailed for fourteen days".

First Charge:
That on the 19th day of May 1889 at Downs in such County Defendant was found on the licensed premises of John Connolly during prohibited hours not being a bona-fide traveller, lodger or inmate contrary to law.

Second Charge:
That on the 19th of May 1889 at Downs in said County Defendant being found during prohibited hours upon the licensed premises of John Connolly and being required to give your name and address did give to Complainant* a false name and address contrary to law.

Order of the court:
Ben had at least two others for company on the day in question. In regards being found on licensed premises when he shouldn't the Judge just notes 'Like rule as in No 62'. Ben is No 64 and unfortunately No 63 is on the previous page which I can't access. A second page, not pictured, lists a fine of 7s. for the offence and 1s. for court costs.

For lying about his name and address he is fined two shillings and six pence and one shilling for court costs.

The second page, which I haven't included, notes that if in default (for either charge) he will receive 7 days imprisonment in Wicklow Gaol.

William Henderson, of Carnew, That the defendant was found drunk on the public street at Rathdrum in said County on the 7th of June 1881.

Ordered to pay a fine of five shillings and one shilling costs or in default of payment to be in prisoned in Wicklow Gaol for 48 hours.

William never paid this fine (I would suspect he just couldn't afford it) and he spends two days in Wicklow Gaol. See the documents section for the original registration.

The defendant is ordered to pay two shillings and six pence fine and the sum of six pence costs.

Ben has settled down, he has his own home in the Downs, his first child, Benjamin Joseph, is due any day so this is clearly the best time to get a dog. Or as a fairly law-abiding citizen you might decide to license the dog you already have.

Dog licenses were introduced into law in 1865 and each license cost 2s. and a further 6d. for 'administration'.

So on 26 March 1886 Ben pays 2s. 6d. for a black male terrier. Good news for the dog because in March 1887 he returns to Newtown Court House to license a (hopefully the same) black male terrier.

In 1891, after a couple of years silence on the dog front, Ben returns to license a male yellow terrier... and in 1892 he turns up at Newtown Courthouse on both the 25th and 26th of March to register two yellow male terriers.

In 1894 he bought his last license for a black and tan female terrier.
